Pope-Golson Plantation House
The finest unaltered Federal-style home in the county, this two and one-half story frame, hip-roofed house has a five bay front. It was built for Dr.Edgar A. Pope on the Alabama River circa 1835. It was, presumably, disassembled and moved about 1860 to its present location on Shadow Lane in Prattville. The house exhibits unusually high massing, a modillioned cornice, pedimented gable dormers, semi-elliptical transom and sidelingts, and one-story pedimented gable porch. Crowning the residence is an unusual rectangular roof monitor. The overall effect of the Pope-Golson House is decidedly different from most articulations of the Federal style in the Deep South. The interior contains an especially fine elliptical spiral stairway that rises to the third level. Featured on the cover of Alabama Catalog: A Guide to the Early Architecture of the State, this is one of the true landmark houses in the state.
