This is a circa 1840, one story, frame building with flush-board facade. The structure is rectangular (five-bay front), has a gabled roof, two interior chimneys at ridge, and a shed porch across the front with latticed trelliage supports linked by scrollcut flatwood balustrade. The hotel was built on a central hall plan. It has nine-over-nine sashing.
The Mims Hotel was originally located at the corner of Chestnut and Third Streets. It was moved to First Street by Autauga County Heritage Association in 1982. It was then sold to Prattvillage Associates who began restoration. Final restoration was completed by a local businessman.
The Mims Hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing property of the Daniel Pratt Historic District. Exactly when the Mims name became associated with it is not known. The earliest known proprietors were Simon and Maria McLemore. Their daughter, Orlene, married Wilbur Mims, a son of Shadrach Mims. The younger couple took over the operation of the hotel and propably it was then that it became known as the Mims Hotel.
Sidney Lanier, the famous poet of the South, had a front room in the hotel when he was headmaster at Prattville Academy after the Civil War.
