Autaugaville Historic District

The Autaugaville Historic District contains seven buildings and one cemetery. Six of the buildings are locatd on one block of Dutch Bend Street between Autauga Street and North Pickett Street (County Road 19). The seventh building is located on North Pickett Street across f rom Dutch Bend Street with the cemetery situated directly behind the building.

From the earliest days of Autaugaville, Dutch Bend Street was the main thoroughfare and center of town until as late as the 1950s.

Senior Citizens Center
Built in circa 1927, this one story brick building with a U-shaped floor plan has a basement and a gabled roof. It has a gabled front porch over the right front entrance, and a gabled dormer above the center front entrance. It has four chimneys--two exterior and two interior. The building was originally the private residence of the Hicks family. Today it serves as Autaugaville Senior Citizen Center in the right section, and Gregg Propane, Inc. occupies the left section.

2408 Dutch Bend Street
This circa 1914 free standing brick building is rectangular in shape and has one story with a parapet extending above the flat roof. There is a chimney on the right side of the building. Originally used to house Autaugaville Citizens Bank, the building has also served as the United States Post Office, as a pharmacy, and finally as an auto parts store. It is currently owned by the Town of Autaugaville and used as storage space.

2404 Dutch Bend Street
Constructed in circa 1925 and used as a grocery store until circa 1950, this free standing building is covered by corrugated tin and has a corrugated tin facade. It is rectangular in shape and has a tin parapet that extends above the gabled roof. The front center entrance consists of double doors made of diagonal planks. Diagonal planks make up the shutters which cover the windows flanking the front entrance. Shutters are secured by an iron bar. A canopy of wood and tin overhangs the entrance and sidewalk. Both an exterior and interior chimney extend above the roof.

2402 Dutch Bend Street
This circa 1927, one-story free standing building is of rectangular shape. It has a flat roof and a chimney on its right side. At the left front is a single doorway of wood while the center entrance is large double doors of sheet metal. Four metal rods used to sustain a fixed awning are still present. To use the building as a movie theater, a wall near the front was constructed. A room to the left of the front center was built for concessions and office space. Originally the building was used by Jones Brothers Grocery until around 1948. It was the town movie house from 1948 until circa 1953, after which time it was the town hall and library. Since 1971, it has been used for storage. The property is owned by the Town of Autaugaville.

226 North Pickett Street
Built in circa 1860, this brick and wood residence has one story and basement. It has a gabled roof and a gabled porch over the front entrance which is supported by four wooden columns with brick bases. The front porch and sidewalk are constructed o stone. A large addition was constructed on the left side of the building in circa 1930. Former uses of the building included office space for Dr. J. Lewis Snow from 1901 to 1906, Dr. James Tankersley's office from 1906-1917, and for Dr. R. S. Shanks from 1917 until 1930. From 1930 until present it has served as a private residence.

2407 Dutch Bend Street
Built in circa 1925, this brick, rectangular shaped building housed Charlton and Company General Merchandise Store. The store continued in business until around 1954, after which time the structure served Autauga County Board of Education as a Bus Garage until circa 1973. Elevator Maintenance and Repair, Inc. has occupied the building since 1985. The building is one story. The front center entrance consists of two six-panel wooden doors thought to be original.A single concrete step at the entrance has a 1926 U.S.G.S. survey marker embedded in it. All windows except those at the rear are thought to be original.

2409 Dutch Bend Street
Pearson's Grocery Store and Gas Station was built around 1925. It served in this capacity until 1941. In 1954 the Autauga County Board of Education used it as a school bus garage. Since 1985 it has been used by Elevator Maintenance and Repair, Inc. This one story, brick (painted) structure has a pyramidal roof o tin construction. The center front gabled dormer is of corrugated tin. Probably there was a window in the dormer at one time. The center front entrance consists of horizontal-sliding warehouse doors of wooden planks. One of the two original gasoline tanks remain near the front entrance.
