Autauga County's Rosenwald Schools |
|
Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, Roebuck and Company, in 1914 presented a $30,000 gift for construction of 100 rural schools in Alabama. The project was administered by Booker T. Washington at Tuskegee Institute.
Six Rosenwald funded buildings were constructed in Autauga County. Of these, only one, Mt. Siani, has survived. This old building is located adjacent to the Mt. Siani Baptist Church on County Road 57, approximately 11 miles from Prattville.
A local committee is diligently working to raise funds to repair and restore the historic Afro-Autaugan school. If you would like more information or would like to contribute to this effort, please contact Mr. Mack Houser at 334-365-5817.
